Baby, We’ll Get By

This is for my four-year-old self, a bright yet insecure little girl. I wish I could hold her as I hold my son, stroke her hair and say “it is good that you’re here. You are not a mistake”.

Forgive me, little girl

For thinking you were not enough

For making you grow up so tough

For letting others treat you rough

I’m sorry, little girl

For every time I made you cry

And couldn’t even explain why

I wish I could tell you this is not goodbye

Baby, hear my lullaby

We’ll get by, you and I

I’m here, little girl

I promise I won’t let you down

I won’t let your memory in this darkness drown

Come, dress up in your favourite gown

Dance with me, little girl

Let me take you by the hand

All those fears of yours disband

Carry you across this desert sand

Baby, hear my lullaby

We’ll get by, you and I
