Were I but free

Have they seen our surreptitious glances?

Can they feel the bond that us entrances?

Do not cease your clandestine advances

Though I cannot take these nightly chances

It is the course of fated romances

To disband in dreams of secret dances

How this sacrifice our love enhances

Yet I pray for altered circumstances

Oh, were we but free

Were it you and me
